Stop reaching behind the rack.
A new idea arrives, and you pull the desk from the wall to find the right cable. Wire your equipment once to the rear jacks instead. After that, short patch cables on the front panel do the rerouting.
A switch on top of every channel
Each of the 24 channels has its own switch on top of the unit. NORMAL links the two rear jacks until you plug into the front. HALF NORMAL lets you take a signal from jack A without breaking the path. Fill both front jacks and you have an input break for an effect. THRU suits sources that only have outputs.

The everyday route, already made
Wire a mixer's subgroup outputs through NORMAL channels to a computer audio card. Return the card's outputs to the mixer's 2-track inputs. Now you record and play back without a single patch cable.

Order you can read at a glance
Upper jacks are always outputs, lower jacks inputs. Two rows of 24 balanced ¼" jacks fill the 1 HU 19" front rack panel, mirrored on the rear. Unbalanced cables work too. Keep microphone and digital signals off it, as the manual advises.
