Get the voice right before it reaches the computer.
You record voice-overs at home. Every session ends with the same fixes: uneven levels, sharp S sounds, noise in the pauses. The UV1 deals with them on the way in. After the mic preamp come a compressor, de-esser, enhancer and expander/gate.
Even levels, softer S sounds
COMPRESSOR DRIVE sets the amount of gain reduction, and the GAIN REDUCTION meter shows it. The guide suggests around 6 to 9 dB for most vocal applications. If sibilance is a problem, set DE-ESSER FREQUENCY between 4 and 8 kHz. Then turn DE-ESSER THRESHOLD up until the harsh S sounds are tamed.

Quiet between the words
To mute unwanted background noise, set EXP/GATE RATIO to its centre 2:1 position. Turn EXP/GATE THRESHOLD up until whispering turns the red LED off and the green LED on. HF DETAIL adds high-frequency energy, and LF DETAIL adds punch and definition in the lows.

Record processed or pure
Over USB, the UV1 sends stereo signals to and from your computer. A Mac needs no driver; for Windows, download it from Behringer.com. Press PROCESS BYPASS to record the pure mic preamp signal for editing with plug-ins later. MONITOR MIX blends your direct sound with playback in your headphones.
